Beta Stress Test pt. 1 (AKA "Forced Beta")

The backend of the new beta is pretty much stable, so I've elected to redirect all traffic to the Beta site for the next few hours to see how it holds up. So far it's shitting on wordpress.

Please direct all feedback and complaints to this post.

What is this beta stress test? I can't figure anything out. I can't even find the file that I wanted to download! When is the old version coming back?

Coopsta said...

When query with a tag Ie a music Genre, 10 results are returned, with no, view more results.
Thats the only complaint I can see here. Everything else seems fine, the tags are great etc.

insane said...

takes a bit to get to usto it but change is usually good ...
seems faster tho

We_Ready said...

Yeah...if you are looking under music or something specific it only shows one page of results and doesn't let you go any further.

Anonymous said...

It looks like shit on my laptop with 1280 x 800.

It would be better to incorporate the boxes around each entry like before. The color scheme is much nicer, less depressing :) And I didn't see a way to change pages when selecting a filter. Overall not bad, but, honestly I'd prefer more like before with these colors.

Anonymous said...

IMO
faster
easier to use
just one thing: tags are a bit too big compared to titles

That's all
Work in progress looks pretty cool so far
Well done guys

insane said...

got one more thing ... is this really needed ? -> Your Contributions:

In the last 3 days you have contributed precisely dick to the existence of this site. Shame on you

Niklas said...

There's too much going on. Too many symbols and buttons and shiny stuff. But I don't really have any good input besides that. Just keep doing your thing!

Mr Wacky said...

I like the way the new site looks apart from its hard to differenciate between the posts. Maybe you can add something inbetween more visible so that we can tell the difference easier.

j said...

Honestly i like it better as it was before, although it seems much faster using the beta. I know you're still in development so I'm sure it's only going to get better. Thank you for all the hard work. Scenddl has become my most trusted and valuable Scene source.

Coopsta said...

As insane said, is "Your contibutions" needed and is even "popular releases" needed especially with so many new releases it may as well just be called latests releases, but we can see them on the homepage anyway.

Anonymous said...

meh wants the queue back

benlinus said...

Well, I'm not too sure about this new layout, the posts are too compact. They are just too close to each other and it's difficult to read with the current fonts and their colour. Also, I'd like the old categories sidebar widget back. I only download TVRips and movies. With that much porn and audio on the front page, I'm at a loss.

Jaroslaw said...

I think it's fast, but too many info.
Get rid off tags (too many of them: TV-XVID Jimmy Fallon 2009 06 15 Matthew Broderick HDTV BAJSKORV - almost the same as file name:
Jimmy.Fallon.2009.06.15.Matthew.Broderick.HDTV.XVID-BAJSKORV) :)
Maybe the exact date and time of post is better then how much time ago it was added.
Also, the previous skin was not bad :)

Anonymous said...

You really need to allow people who view specific categories to view multiple pages. :(

Anonymous said...

Guys,
It's impossible to read the nfo (for example as an "Associated Image" here: http://beta.sceneddl.net/Sophia_Fresh-What_It_Is-DVDRip-x264-2009-SNO/Release.aspx) or even to save the pic to read it, we can only grab the thumb and of course it's unreadable.
Not a complaint but need to be fix as there is no other way on the page to read the nfo.
Thx.

looks good but prefer the original sceneddl. Was easier to nanavigate and find the shows I was looking for.

ps.. you contributed precisely d**k gave me the biggest laugh of the day..

insane said...

i laughed at the "your contribution" at the first time but really afer 5-6 times it gets annoying :P

Anonymous said...

First of all, speed is great! Now for some constructive criticism...

Ditch the icons littered throughout the site. The tag icons are one example of icon-overkill. They interrupt the eye as it scans the page. Its really just a physiological thing. The two things I know I come to this site for is:

1. Release title
2. Links

All the rest should fade into the background, taking up minimal space on the page and accessible only to the extent that they NEED to be.

Just my 2 cents. SceneDDL rocks.

Jay said...

Added paging to the search page. This was something I intended to do beforehand but other stuff got in the way.

The icons are temporary. They will be replaced with more subtle indicators in the near future.

As for distinguishing between posts. I'll get on to my design buddie for that. Perhaps reducing the size of status text.

As for the "Your contributions" and "Popular posts". User customization will be enabled to some extent in the final product, so these will be hideable. However, the popular posts menu is not the same as the latest posts page. It displays the most popular posts in the last 24 hours based on views, votes and comments. Porn seems to be dominating it at the minute. Guess our users are all perverts.

For the people who were wanting the categories menu back. Well, I'll get round to it when I get round to user customizable hiding of sections from frontpage. For the moment, however, you can use the advanced search to select the category you want (For example enter INTAG:TV into search to display TV DVDRips, XviD and X264).

Cardoso said...

it´s good, it´s like everythin else, every change, we just need to adapt our eyes like we did to pre Sceneddl. This all thing it´s about change.

tip - add more main categories like Games, or XXX

Anonymous said...

The old version looked better and it was easy to find what you were looking for and easy to use please go back to the old version this new site is a very bad and hard to use

Anonymous said...

The text seems a little large, we aren't old people who need reading glasses. The text size on the original (non-beta) page was perfect.

The search seems to only go back a few days, how can you search for things that were posted last week or last month?

Tag are fine and very useful, please keep them. But also make the relavent tags appear on the page for the release as well, not just on the main page that has a link to the release page. To clarify, on the main page there is a list of releases, the first one (right now) is VA-Sick_Music-NHS154CD-2CD-WEB-2009-UKDNB underneath it are the useful links to the tags: MP3, VA, NHS154CD, 2CD, WEB, 2009, UKDNB, and Drum. So if I click on VA-Sick_Music-NHS154CD-2CD-WEB-2009-UKDNB it takes me to the page with links and NFO and so forth, but the tags MP3, VA, NHS154CD, 2CD, WEB, 2009, UKDNB, and Drum. are no longer available. Those tags should also be on that secondary page. You might ask, why can't I just go to the previous page and click on the tags and navigate from there? Well, that is because if I bookmark VA-Sick_Music-NHS154CD-2CD-WEB-2009-UKDNB for downloading at another time, then having those tags directly on the page would be useful because there is no previous listing page for me to go back to to access the tags. I hope I am being clear, if not please tell me and I will try and articulate what I am trying to say about this!

You should add more categories on the side, just have links to the most common tags underneath the categories (this does not need to be a dynamic list of the most common tags, just put the standard tags for like TV and Movies and so forth right there on the right side underneath the overall category of videos.)

Popular posts are nice but completely unnecessary and probably a strain on resources that goes against the stated motto of redesigning the page to lower CPU strain and so forth.

The NFO pictures are too small, it might be best to keep them as just plain text and have a text viewer like paste2.org It would probably save you bandwidth since text is faster to serve up than images.

Also, about "Collection provided by SceneDDL. These links are interchangable. Score: 30". What does the score part mean?

benlinus said...

Cheers for responding and the tip about the advanced search. I was also wondering, do you have any plans to add 720p/1080p BD5/9 releases in the future? I can't seem to find them anywhere, and I would love to get links for them here.

Anonymous said...

I prefer the old version.

Keep MP3 releases hidden.

Anonymous said...

What I like is the interface, its clean and nice, however, it seems that you have deleted or stopped some old files. Also, one fact that ticks me off is that there are no buttons for xvid, x264, essentailly no categories and therefore I have to wade through stuff I don't want to see to find the stuff that I do want to see. Please pub categories back and up

Anonymous said...

This new design looks like a kindergarten homepage with all this icons, sorry, its crap, and its unreadable. Font sizes, the colors, underlines, and what not, all that makes it just unreadable, at least to me. The old design was very good, please keep it.

And whats with this damn "you have javascript turned off" shit-overlay, i know that its turned off geez! Turn JS on to see the damn adds, yeah, right, so google adsense and all that shit works.

The timestamps are gone, now you can't even look whats new since, lets say yesterday 12:43. Do we have to calcute date and time now or what? It ridiculous.

Sure, you will always hear "oh your da man Jay and do your thing", but i promise you you will loose people to other sites.

And whatfor is a beta good if you force people to it? Stresstest? Stresstest for us, not the damn site. Beta goes online if its tested and not as a damn joke.

If it stays like that, i will go back to the site that i used before, not as much stuff as here, or better: the stuff isnt there as quick as here, but after a few hours there are mirrors all over the internet, and dont tell me it comes all from here. And its at least clear and readable and runs even without JS, even though it does have JS implemented.

And yes, i agree with a few comments here, how arrogant must one be, to tell your visitors that they are dicks and dont contribute, what the fuck do you know what people contribute and in what way, eh?

I already see the answers to my post, they are always the same if it comes to critism

@24/anonymous:

The text size is on the todo list, as is tags on the release page. The categories list is merely ment as a guide. Tagging is intended to replace categories, and yes there will be a Most Used tags menu on the sidebar.

On the subject of CPU usage, that is the point of the forced beta, however to be honest I'm not expecting it to be high in the slightest because the entire thing is coded by me (awesome) instead of the wordpress team (congregation of labotamized chimps).

On the subject of NFOs, the plan is to replace tinypic uploading with a more stable nfo database.

Link collection score is based on votes and the submitting user's reputation.

@benlinus
Plans to upload more have hit a temporary snag due to the fact that our new server sucks balls. We'll be moving away from OVH and their 500kb/s-upstream-for-gigabit server at the end of the month

@generic complainers
While the redirection to the beta may be temporary, very soon the beta (albeit a much improved version) will replace the main site completely. The beta database will be wiped clean and all the users and posts from the old site will be imported

Anonymous said...

Search only comes up with stuff a few days old like above states, what happened to releases about a week or month old

Anonymous said...

Why cant u found old releases when u search the site? Is this just temporarily?

Anonymous said...

@28

"This is a beta. Only a fool would take this as final." ~ The about page

The noscript overlay advising about javascript is there because most of the important parts of the site explicitly rely on javascript. You'd notice this had you looked past the frontpage.

The "Your contributions" menu on the sidebar is a static placeholder and is not meant to be interpreted literally.

Anonymous said...

I find the new format difficult to read. I think the movie/music/age/comments icons would be better placed on the same line as the title, or maybe indented so the title stands out. As it is everything seems to blend together and I find it difficult to scan.
Also, would like to be able to drill down into different categories, eg video > tv > whatever, or music > hip hop.
That said, great site, thanks for all your work.

Jay said...

Anonymous, you're a genius. Indent is used everywhere else, why didn't I think of that :F I'll try it out.

Anonymous said...

ARGH!!!
Usually I liked to get kissed first before I am forced ... or is that another F word?
Seriously, it has potential, but I can't find anything. Just a swamp of vids without any subsections.
You need More sections per topic (e.e. Movie, TV, XXX, etc) that you can get to from the sidebar.
More later as I use it
... W ...

Jay said...

I'm getting tired of repeating myself. Sections have been replaced by tags.

NotAnonymousThatWas#28 said...

Thanks for your reply Jay.

Guess I'm #28 (where can you see this post-numbers???)

Anyway ... Jay, i noticed that, of course, i can read sourcecode, but you have to understand: I (and I'm pretty sure, a lot others too) have a small button here, i turn JS on/off with one click, and it stays OFF as long as i only "look through" and it goes on if i find something interesting and want to see more, but this huge "Turn your Javascript blabla" overlay makes it hard to read the posted comment, so please, remove this overlay or use something small on top of the page, but not an overlay.

And please bring back date and timestamps, not how long ago it was posted. See, I do know how long ago if i see date and time ;)

i hate the look of the beta vers. please don't change from the old vers. the only noticable benefit is that the pages seem to load quicker.

tbh the overall look & feel to the beta vers. is that it looks cheap & ameturish.

Jay said...

Getting rid of the time ago crap is on the todo list.

I'll get around to removing the overlay too. It's left over from when the entire site required javascript.

The entries are too crowded. Need a line of some sort to separate items. Search only brings up a few items, but I'm sure you're gonna fix that. I couldn't find a way to just get certain categories (XXX, etc). It's a work in progress and as such, it looks pretty good.It does need some fine tuning though.

Wtf?? The layout is horrible - the icons are too small, text way way too big it's all confusing. I hate to be all negative here but you should definitely consider different graphic designer. This is definitely a step back - utter fail comparable only to the new JDownloader!

About SceneDDL:

This is a beta. Only a fool would take this as Final.

About that comment.....

Only a Super-Fool would call this a beta. Ut looks more like an pre-alpha or a alpha at the best!

Looks like a total crap! Earlier version was much better with preview of screenshots for each release + More release per page view, making browsing much faster and easier.

This is a total mess with most of the shows/data missing and not at all easier to browse!

Get the old version with a little more eye candy, look of the website.

Thanks

too many tags, why black?(-ish), lets grey it
the time and other tags should be size-fixed (width) - that way all stuff below title will be aligned, also its too cluttered and dominating on page, the title should dominate - black font, maybe some background...

taking tags from .nfo fails on R&B, taking only R as genre

the beta generally sucks, cant look at it, without bleedeng my eyes ;/

I believe the tags are not necessary and can be replaced by better information such as what links are available and I think the entries generally need spacing out a little to make the title stick out a little more.

Just seems cramp and a little confusing at the moment.

It's a probably a good sign though, if a lot of people are outraged at the new design, it means the site is very popular. Come on folks, there is no need to be rude or to keep hurling insults at Jay. He's clearly trying his best, a few kind words would go a long way. Even if this is the internet and anonymity is guaranteed, there are better ways to express one's frustration or displeasure than by constant cursing.

Jay said...

I think it looks like crap. Please change back. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Anonymous said...

Here are some practical suggestions for your new version of the site:

- there should be more space between items.
- title should be black or any dark color, not gray
- titles of the pages should be in reverse order - you should put the title of the current page before the title of the site.
- you should consider replacing dots and underscores with spaces at least in titles.
- there is no need for 'associated' in "Associated Links" and "Associated Comments".
- you could replace small icons that represend category an item is in with larger and more prominent icons.
- instead of current icons that are below the title you could use text labels that are in some white shade of gray, or you could use monochrome icons. The actual data you are representing should be in a dark shade of gray or some other dark color. It wouldn't hurt if this was also a little smaller than currently.
- if you look at the template for this page, you will see that there is color and spacing that direct viewers to important parts of the page.

I hope this helps make your final site more appealing to everyone.

1)more releases per page , 10 is way , way low

2)Add a link to expand all the posts as it is on the old scenedll , on the expand you should atleast display the cap image , helps to find new shows/movies :D

3)Movies etc should allways have preview caps it helps a lot , but NEVER again use that lame coding to automaticly retrieve an image & link from tvrage , it was working okay back in the days that only popular releases where posted on the site , this days 9 of 10 releases in movies/tv shows section have wrong image/link

4)"Popular posts" should be relevant to the categorie i am browsing , so if i am on movies section i should see the popular movies and not an overall popular as it is now

5)Use more proper font sizes , right now they are way big

6)Add an advanced search

5)Icons should have an alt tag so on moust over we can actualy tell what each one means (yea i understand what they mean allready but thats how it should be :P)

6)Give more space between each post on the listing

7)Displaying tags on the listing DOESNT really help , removing the tags from the listing would make the page more clean

8)You really have to add options to include/excluse specific categories , right now i am on the homepage and its fully spammed by programs which i dont give a crap about -.- , however i would LIKE to see everything else (All realeases - applications)

9)Remove tags from listing

10)Seriously remove tags from listing , they are stupid and the automatic way they are getting added they fail prety bad , on a release with the name "Electrasoft.32bit.ftp.v09.06.17.Winall.Regged.YPOGEIOS"
it has the tags "ODAY","Electrasoft.32bit.ftp" ," v09.06" , "17", "YPOGEIOS" . Tags really fail on the way they are added in the site..."

Jay said...

1. Todo list
2. No
3. We try our best
4. Good idea
5. They're only big if you have bogus windows settings
6. There already is one
5. There is. Alt tags arent displayed on mouseover in firefox.
6. Todo list
7. That's your personal preference.
8. Todo list
9. No
10. No.

If possible, kindly post the actual nfo file instead of the screenshot.

Alex said...

@5It has nothing to do with windows , atleast not in my case , using 14pt for the title and 12pt for the descriptiong IS fucking huge , if you find find it normal you should make an apointement with a doctor to have your eyes checked , something more apropriate would be 12pt for title and 10pt for description ,that looks decent

@6 Where is it ? I only see a search field on the top right corner .

@7,8,9 It doesn't have to do with my personal preference , the point is that the "automatic"system you have creates tags that fail , you will end up with a fucked up tags index that will make searching harder (if tags get counted in search results , i guess they do , thats there purpose ..) , they are some usefull tags but most of the times i see the tags beeing way lame and not helping at all. On top of that i can understand there use & how it can be usefull to be displayed when you view a specific release ,
however having them on the LISTING which equals to ~30 more characters on my screen per post = fail ,

one more time , tags should be used to categorizing ferther the release , having as a "tag" the name of the release , the version of the release etc equals to fail , it would be really usefull to be able for example to have tags based on if a song is .mp3/flac/ogg or whatever , or even the group that done the release

On the listing , the posts would be better CENTERED than to be aligned left as they are now , if for some wierd reason you prefer them aligned to the left atleast add some margin/padding so they are not that close to the border of the window ...

Lol , i will add more things later , the electrical power went off so i need to close the computer before the ups runs out ... lame -.-

OK ... I was forced into the beta test.
Good work so far, but it needs some tweaks.
The key I think is to remember that it should be easy to find things, plus have the latest stuff added as fast as possible.
The three sections were OK, but there needs to be sub-catagories as in the current version.
Speed was a bit sluggish, but that could be due to the test system.
I did like the pages where additional links coudl be added and commented upon.
Also, as to adding tags based on the type (TV-RIP, BD-RIP) etc ... a good first stab, but since there was no way to get to them unless you were clicked on one under a listing, it was a bit hard to use.
Like I said, good effort, about 75% there.
Plus ... it was GOOD you forced a test on all folks for a short while. I myself had not tried the beta until you did. By doing a force you got a much wider group to try it out, instead of just programmers.
Unfortunatly, you got a lot of whines too.
Keep up the good work.

Now let me see here, I have taken a few looks at the beta site and I must say its getting a hell of a lot better.

Now to point out a whole range of things,

- Those of you here just saying its crap or it sucks does NOT help anyone.

- Those of you against Javascript need to get with the current Web 2.0 experience and get your heads from up your own arses, for simple reason, go ahead and google for AJAX and see if you can prove me wrong.

- Now for points about improvements, suggestions etc.
-- Allow savable customisations to the site (have seen this commented above) BUT with the following ideas
--+ Allow sections of each page to be hidden (Tags, icons, and other post info)
--+ Allow each user to specifiy how many posts to show per page
--+ Add in accessibility options (Yeah I know it sounds boring but the point of doing it will allow each user to change the size of text to suit them)
--+ Colour changing and/or Themes (Allowing each user to select what they like to see - you could also add in a template which looks and reacts the same or similar to the existing wordpress page)
--+ Bring in some AJAX style additions (Floating info boxes as you hover over a title - displaying downloads, hits, further info, etc)
--+ Custom front page based on a series of tag searches (for example allowing a user to make a list of searches for fav items, which then create a custom front page for them, say letting them tag MP3 DVDRip and having only those show as they open the front page)

*takes a typing break and re-reads what has been typed*

OK and now for the praise part, searching on the beta is a hell of a lot better, for example if I want to search for the latest in Dance music I can now find it pretty damm quick, compared with the ye ole slow, read every MP3 post to find out if its Dance music or not style way.

Oh and one more thing before I head to sleep, RSS??

concerning the font sizes it is better as it is, don't change it!
