Changes:
Theme tweakage should make it more compatible for people running lower resolutions.
Raised the posts-per-page for both latest and search to 20.
Added links for all major sections to the sidebar.
Also, some people were asking for an advanced search last time when there has been one for quite some time. The advanced option based search can be accessed via google-style keywords in the form of “OPTION:VALUE”
Options:
TAG - Releases have a tag that IS [value]
INTAG - Releases have a tag that CONTAINS [value]
RLS - Release IS [value]
INRLS - Release CONTAINS [value]
SECTION - Release is in [value]
SEARCH - Results must match [any] or [all] of the options specified
Example:
To select all TV-XVID releases by KYR, one would input the following into the search box
INTAG:TV INRLS:-KYR
To select all dance music releases, one would input the following into the search box
SECTION:Music TAG:MP3 TAG:Dance
To select all dance music OR rock music releases, one would input the following into the search box
TAG:Dance TAG:Rock SEARCH:ANY
This is for constructive feedback only. Posts consisting of "Bawwww, i dont like it, it fucking sucks, im autistic and afraid of change" will be ignored.

Film&Televison section should have a Movies button.
far to hard to read and navigate.
much prefer the older style
I think you don't need to put the time of upload and linksets. Just put # of Comments & Tags in one line and then you can make it look less crowded and you can double/triple the number of releases on a page so that you don't have to go up to page 30 if you want to see all of today's. Just up to page 10-15.
Also, RSS please :D
hard to read, hard to navigate, this is way to confusing,
the numbers at the end of the pages (to go forward to the next page) does not work or not appearing....
Loads ten times faster than old site easy to navigate.Like it so far
I am sure someone put some hard work into this, but as a design this is incredibly bad. Hard to read, all blurs together, requires Javascript... it's like the Bad Design Trifecta. I would not want to go to that site often.
I was using Firefox the other day and it totally froze my laptop.
Seems like we have two types of users. Ones who accept change, and ones who like to live in the past. If you were hoping for a Lynx compatibility then I'm afraid you're out of luck.
bring back the previous style and enough with this redesign shenanigans! if it aint broke dont fix it!
I consider anything built for linux to be broke. The 30 second loading times merely drive the point home.
Oh, and RSS is on tomorrow's ToDo list. How detailed would you like it to be?
I kind of like the new look it would be good to see related posts like with tv series if you come into a show at ep 4 from that post you can find the first eps?
are you still gonna have a link to the queue?
* The 'next' button needs to be on the right hand side of the page numbers not the left.
* Each release is taking up to much space, needs to be more compact to allow more releases shown per page (see mininova.org for example)
For RSS,
I think everything but the links. So for Sunshine Cleaning for example, you would just have Section, Release, Publish, Availability, Associated Images.
Also it would be nice to have a link that lists all the tags. Like, R5 doesn't have a R5 Tag so if I didn't know, i'd tried to go TAG:R5. In reality, it's tagged as XviD. But I probably wouldn't know that if I hadn't seen another R5 release tagged as Xvid.
Love it - the icons make it easier to find what you are after (eg music, games, movies etc), its clean it's quicker to download and the links to rapidshare are just a one click download which is better than having to cut and paste them into the browser. Love it!
You're going to make the changes anyway, regardless of what anyone thinks, so just do it and stop looking for approval!
Don't be so fucking arrogant as to think that everyone will instantly love it, 'cause that ain't gonna happen.
Your own judgement is obviously clouded by the process of the revision itself, and coming from a very different perspective than that of the people who just 'use' the site.
Please, keep it how it was! If you were worried about the posts getting lost because there are so many, then this is heading in the wrong direction. How about you move back to the old (more recent changes made though) style with headers that can be min or maximized (e.g. a "Movies" header that will show the last 10 releases. Same goes for "TV", etc...)
exactly, I agree ^^^^, just do it. not good at all and very confusing, just change it, or leave it the way it was.
I won't be able to use this site. Requiring Javascript for *browsing basic content* is the hallmark of incompetent designers who want their users to get infected by malware... why on earth would you force this as a beta when it so obviously has basic problems? It's becoming a laughing stock...
I think this change is more about you being bored and wanting to play with new toys (why you always switch around between CMS systems) and less about a better product, which is why you'll see a short spike out new users as people will be curious, then slowly they will all slip away...
i think u should separate movies 4m TV cause it's kinda make me confused
I admit, my preference for the old look and feel may be biased by sheer experience and acquired familiarity, but I just can't feel good about the new design. Every time I visit the site (I'm normally an RSS-only dude) I want to bounce (think in analytics terms).
But for some constructive criticism, get rid of the left column icons, the time icon, the linkset icon and the comments icon. It only takes one visit to get the gist of what and where those data points reside in a listing. A repeat user shouldn't need an ever-present visual cue. What needs to immediately stand out is the release title, and right now, I feel like its still competing with these aesthetic superfluities.
I'm all for change, just hoping its for the better.
Unlike some of the others, I'd like to thank you for opening this up to public discussion. I think its commendable.
I like things simpler. This takes forever to load and fonts are way too big. Of course ours opinions are meaningless but I posted anyway
the changes are awesome except it is hard to read
change is healthy people
Please, can you have the search options, that you listed here, somewhere on the site (not necessarily on the main page, maybe in a help or FAQ section). Because I'm sure I'm not the only one around here with crappy memory :P. I mainly use sceneddl for releases that I already know are out. So for me as long as the search works well, I am happy!
As for other suggestions: either using subcategories or splitting the current ones, particularly for Film + TV, and Software + Games.
And btw the new beta site is MUCH MUCH faster than the old one. The old one was sometimes way too frustrating taking almost a minute to load!!!
Thanx and keep up the great work :)
where is the rss feed ???
Only question:
What does the score mean above the links?
General comment: I like it. But.
1) as other people have already mentioned, release names are way too big. It just looks bad and wastes space that could be used for something else.
2) PLEASE, make an option to download original nfo
3) image viewer looks fancy first few times, but then its slowness is simply annoying. Good we can middle click the images then.
Something changed and it looks good, but I'd make the tags and time information a little bit darker, cause now I almost have to select the text just to read it
I like it but would appreciate seperate catergories for films and tv-shows
@Felix: for tv shows you can do this by searching for "INTAG:TV" that'll only display the results that have TV in their tags, for movies you can try "TAG:XVID" if you want xvid movies anyway
humm seems that the posts color fading isnt really a good idea .. it starts from black and ends with white wich is rather unreadable problem .... you could try using blue title instead of black [or grey] then linksets time and comments into green [like the ChipIn button is ] and the tags part as the title is atm ...
anyway just an idea ... cos the fading dosent really work well ...
Hope they dont change it, I understand about change but there was nothing wrong with the old style, this new one looks a right dogs bollocks...
People under the misconception that the beta is purely for the purposes of aesthetics should cease commenting.
if you brows the site with Opera, some of the links are overimposed by other text, also some of the small links dont change color when putting the pointer over them.
This beta is much faster thats for sure, I like the logos and NFO pics.
I just tried a search for Breaking Bad on the beta & it showed no results, so I went to the old style & did the same... & hey presto it worked.
So in conclusion, maybe we can tweak the search or maybe it's because it's still in beta?
Oh & my 2p's worth, the beta's ok but the older version IS easier on the eye & neater looking
Congratulations Giko, you've successfully worked out that the beta was lauched last week. Doofus. Importing the old DB won't be done until the beta is migrated fully.
well, this iterations looks better, and feels better
some tweaks on title font size and a little bit darker tags, time text
also some tweaks on post separation
things are going the right way
i miss the half-full visibility of posts in main page (the expand/collapse) thing
going thru thumbnails is more enjoyable than clicking every post to see it
and maybe split movies to television and movies?
and i got a flash!
sorting of search/tags results with time/name/linksets
It's a stress beta alright. I'm sure I entered my username and pass right, but it won't recognize me. :[[
I also think movies should be split to movies and TV; they represent completely different interests.
Beets
aka Beethoven
Much harder to see what your looking at, prefer the old look. Need a rating system, as some films or tv series are unknown, if they were rated highly, might be worth dloading.
Point taken Numbnuts, hence I stated that it was probably because it was still in beta!!!! I'm not very technically minded, just an average stupid user (like allot of people) that like to visit your site, (which is very good by the way).
Not sure I caught the original explanation why you felt the need to tinker so much (but then again I'm only a doofus lol)
I'm not against change so maybe you can make it look less messy, just a point of view ;)
Hate it, Hate it, Hate it,
Why only three large, broad sections? Where is the Movies only section without TV and other videos, and the DVDRip only Movies section without the CAMs and BluRay Rips? Or the TV Only section without movies, and the x264 and Xvid sections within those?
What about someone looking for just PC games, now they have to look through PC games, AND Wii games, AND DS games, AND PSP games, AND 360 games, AND PC software, AND Mac software, (and maybe more?).
At first I thought the domain had been parked LOL. Force of habit I guess.
I tried to login and failed. Then I tried to reset the damn password but there's no reset form and that sucks. Can you pleas do smth about that, Jay? Thanks.
Nvm, I just read about the DB.
Now on to the feedback part. I like the larger fonts, I'd love to have more entries per page, rethinking the categories is great, I expect they'll then be further divided based on content.
As I've already suggested on irc, I'd really like to see the sports section being divided according to each individual competition.
can you somehow get all the older releases from the site into the new one, or write a small little script that allows us to search older releases?
please take all the (., -, _) out of the names of titles!
don't really like the new site! The old one is much better! (Design etc.)
But the performance on the new one is great! :)
ye I agree with that
High performance compared to the old one.
A bit hard to read but better, I'm a fan of Betas anyway.
:( i really like previous one, dont like this one at all :(
OK .... good effort.
First, the icon colors cause them to be lost on the page (light grey on white). You can only see them if they are highlighted
Second, I like the new one since you can save the page. I save each DL page in case I need to get a bad part, there is a pswd, or if I want to processit for DL with jdownload later. They wat I can DL on one system and search on another (saving the pages I want to get). On the main site the page data is "encrypted: so if you save it you can not post process the text.
Thanks!
... Wheezer ...
"Seems like we have two types of users. Ones who accept change, and ones who like to live in the past. If you were hoping for a Lynx compatibility then I'm afraid you're out of luck."
lol fuck this, without Linux your site couldn't exist. Lets be honest, you are upset because you tinkered and were hoping for positive feedback to keep you motivated, and instead its laughable. It's speedier than the old site, but in every other way a regression.
It'll be interesting to see if you have the character to own up to that and really improve things or go the adolescent route
And no, requiring Javascript has nothing to do with Lynx or capabilities, it just means you've never really built any web applications. If so you'd know it should be used to improve existing paradigms, not overtake them. It is (a) insecure (b) a laughable means of pulling out content if you are interested in scalability. Not even *hotmail* requires javascript for browsing content. You only see it in web apps where kids don't know better and learned copying and pasting a few javascript snippets.
Look mate, are you trying to build something for people to use? If so, this needs rethinking. And i say that as someone who likes coming as you track a few releases I otherwise use bittorrent for. I can see you regressing and saying "This is just for me! I don't care if anyone likes it!" but that's obviously not true. So take a breath, figure out what you want to accomplish with the design and work from there.
tv - film should NOT be together
movies should have their own seperate listing
making it easier to navigate
I don't mind the new layout. I do however find the older layout easier to navigate. It's not so "In your face."
But, alot of the older releases seem to have disappeared.
Hi,
still have an issue with the large new font size on my laptop at 1024x768 and large
Windows font. It has improved, but is still quite large.

As a comparison, this is how the current
site looks.

might be useful to excluse the XXX posts from the video search, and the same for music vids
though porn is (often) video, I think it should be restricted to its own section. gives a better impression imo.
music video's are video's too, yes, but they're not really video's because of the "pictures" they're more about the music, so I'd prefer to see it not listed under the video search.
However, I do like that the tv and movies are searchable by one easy click (seems like I'm the only one though)
The new search has more features, so it could be helpful to post a guide there, so people don't have to come here to find out you can see only tv's by using the right options (same for movies)
Now that I think about it, it's possible too to show only movies+tv, so you might disregard my first comment (although that video link will be much more used that an option combination, and that suggestion was not to make it easier for myself, but to make the site smoother)
As far as font size goes, we're still transitioning it into a every-resolution friendly design.
As far as javascript requirement goes, I've said in a previous post that it's left over from very early tests.
Also, "without Linux your site couldn't exist," gave me a huge laugh.
Ummm.. the new page sucks! Bring the old one back god dammit! Huhuhuh!
I don't like the new layout at all, and for now won't even be using this site anymore. I'm 100% ok with an XXX section and links to pr0n on a dl site I go to, but I'd rather those links not be on the front page and mixed in with movies and such on the recently posted lists.
Also it is a lot harder to navigate and scroll through quickly without having to stop and read most everything it seems to me, but I could get used to that part more than porn being in with everything else on the home page so that I can't go to that site with some people around.
Keep the porn but not on the homepage
Long links overlap with the righthand frame so they cant easily be read or selected
Another thought:
I can't see the point of the "all releases" and "popular" tabs on this type of site.
How about:
"New Releases" - for brand new stuff
"Other" or "Old Releases" for the older stuff that appears on site (irc requests?) as it is frustrating browsing through individual posts for an entire season of a show when just checking for new releases.
Page loading times are faster so you are going in the right direction, it's just tweaking the design now!
I like the beta. What's "with the Narwhal Appreciation Soceity>>" bit?
@ultraviolet:
Those tabs are left over from when popular posts was actually an entire page instead of a sidebar item.
@Anonymous:
Narwhals are awesome
Fair enough. I quite like the beta layout.
Honestly, I was looking forward to a change here since you always seem to do things right.... but this is VERY hard to "see". Everything runs together and the colors are unpleasant. The categories as others have mentioned were lacking. Under Music, though, when you add the categories back, please separate Music Videos from MP3's.
Also, not that I think this site should "look like" sinlessl**ks but I thought I would suggest that you see how they do episode grouping and the clipboard script is pretty nifty too.
I hope my suggestions are helpful and that you are able to come up with a site that is easier to read and interpret than the beta that we saw yesterday.
thank god old one is back!!
& AkUu
It is going to disappear forever when the beta design is fully implemented.
I don't like
1)When you view release with multiple linksets , you should swap the style-sheet of "Collection provided by SceneDDL.." with the style-sheet used for the host name "Hotfile,Rapidshare" etc ...
2)Add more colors to the website : Right now you have dark blue header and everything else is Black/grey in the website. Change the color of the icons from grey to having each icon with an individual color etc
3)The category icons on the listing should be clickable.
4)Regarding popular tags: a really classic thing that they do on websites is to change the tags name SIZE (on the ppular tags area) based on how popular it is , do that , makes the page less boring.
5)This one is a bit extreme, however in the end it could be really usefull: I really hate the titles of each release , they are UGLY , i understand that they contain really useful information and that is the way they are released BUT they are still ugly. To have an automated script understand what the actual "name" of the thing being released is would be difficult, its release has a prety random way of naming there release , HOWEVER what you could do is this : Have a set of "moderators"(real ppl) that have access to modify the title of each release , those moderators will have this job , change the title of the release to look normal.
So : when a release hasn't been edited by a "mod" to get a normal name, it will display the ugly one. But when the release was moderated and had the name change , the title will be replaced with the one that the moderator gave and under it with smaller letters the original release name will be displayed.
example:
VA_-_Perfect_Relaxation-(2CD)-2009-REDRUM
would be changed to :
Perfect Relaxation
VA_-_Perfect_Relaxation-(2CD)-2009-REDRUM
ye i know the second idea is a bit extreme and its time consuming to be done , however it would be a really nice addition to the website.
Or if you are that good write a script that can learn the patterns the release grps use for the release names so it can be done automaticly ...
6)There should be information regarding the size of each release , i mean you get inside each release and you see all this infrormation regarding its availabiliy (link collections, submited by how many users , how many unique links , on how many hosts) which are somewhat important but not as important as the file size of the release which is a really important thing ...
Also next to "on 2 file hosts" , you might wanna add which file hosts those are , nobody really cares regarding how many file hosts they are posted if the file host they want is not on the list :)
7)The explanation regarding how the search is working should be writtern shomewhere that all the users can read (the google like syntax)
8)It would be a good idea to add an "advanced search" page.A page wil will be displayed with all the available filters a user can define as fields.
So the user instead of typing in a sigle field for the search something like"SECTION: Music TAG: Mp3 TAG: dance INRLS:-kyr" he will have fields for each filter where he can pass his arguments (a drop down menu for categories since they are standar and individual fields for all the filters : tags , release etc). I know that they are a lot of people (including me) that prefer the way it is right now but you should also consider the less geek ppl who are not familiar / they will not like that kind of searching ...
9)Users should be able to filter results by specific file hosts (set for example that i am looking for results where rapidshare links are available) , this wasnt that important on the old scenedll since it was prety standar the hosts that you upload the releases , however since you will be allowing other ppl to post releases aswell on the site this functionality could be usefull .
"As far as javascript requirement goes, I've said in a previous post that it's left over from very early tests."
Missed that, but will be happy to see it go away. I just can't use sites that require it for basic browsing.
"Also, "without Linux your site couldn't exist," gave me a huge laugh."
I could say taking the time to comment at all was being constructive, but I could have been nicer in my entire post honestly. :p
Honestly though, even if you don't use it as your desktop (I don't primarily) if Linux didn't exist, the only option on the web would be Solaris/Windows/OSX which would be much pricier and things you take for granted wouldn't exist. Hosting would be in 2001 mode. No just throwing up a site and seeing what works! Every programming language on the web you aside from RoR runs best and is primarily developed on Linux. Many of the codecs now are rooted there, like x264, as well as client side apps and compilers for them... so yeah, exaggeration, but not that big!
Please be careful: as long as this remains a relatively artisanal show, it will remain safe from legal problems. The more "professional" (i.e.: polished and powerful) this site becomes, the bigger chance it gets of getting on the radar of those you'd like to stay hidden from.
But perhaps that is not so much your concern?
Personally... I do NOT like the "FORCED BETA" either.. it lacks most of the posts that the OLD site has. HOWEVER... INSTEAD of forcing EVERYONE to the BETA site.. is it possible to give folks a CHOICE? I mean.. the old site is already built.. it's running... it's not perfect.. but it's running... the new site... well.. it DEFINATELY needs work! I'd be willing to help in that area if need be.. but unless you're absolutely desparate to have the new site online and running.. I'd give people A CHOICE.. the OLD or the NEW.. they get the same information either way.
I do NOT have 10 second load times.. I use FireFox and dont have NO PROBLEMS with the OLD site. I'm sure y'all are doing fine work... but IMHO... I dont see the point in FORCING folks to use a site that is NOT COMPLETE?? How is that logical??
